 Here's a math brain teaser, Can you solve it? the kingdom of logariths was attacked and overrun by vandals. King Trigonometry and Queen Polynomial were forced to abandon the kingdom, leaving with only their clothes and a cart filled with sacks of gold. In order to leave the kingdom, they had to cross 10 bridges. At each bridge, Trig and Poly had to pay a toll equivalent to half the number of sacks of gold they were carrying plus one more sack. When they crossed the last bridge, all they had left was one sack of gold. How many sacks of gold did they begin with? Work it backwards. 1 at the end. We can check this another way. The 1 at the end and the last 1 taken away get double ten times. That's a total of 2048. The 1 that gets added to the 4 only gets doubled 9 times and that's 512. ... The 1 that gets added to the 1534 only gets double once. So 2048 + 512 + 256 + ... + 8 + 4 + 2 = 3070. |
